Moving to Another State at Lease End: Registration, Tax and Title

If you changed states during your lease, or plan to, the buyout can involve a different set of rules. Here are the questions to ask.

Leases and moves do not always line up. Some drivers relocate halfway through a term, and others move right when the lease is about to end. If a purchase is on the table, location affects tax, registration, and paperwork.

Tell the leasing company

If you moved, your leasing company should have your current address. Contracts often require notice of a move, and registration of a leased vehicle is tied to the lessor's ownership. Updating records early prevents surprises with renewal notices and quotes.

Where is tax owed?

Sales tax on a lease buyout depends on the rules of the jurisdiction involved, and rules differ widely. Some places tax the purchase price. Some apply credits for tax already paid on lease payments. Some assess tax on the residual only. Because this varies and changes, we avoid quoting rates here. Ask your leasing company what, if anything, they collect, and then check with your state's motor vehicle agency or a tax professional about what is due at registration. Our short episode Sales Tax on a Lease Buyout introduces the main ideas.

Who handles the title?

Title processes differ by state. Some states issue electronic titles and some print paper ones. A title may be held by the lessor until payoff, then released to you or to a new lienholder. If your lease was originally titled in one state and you now live in another, the lessor and the state agencies may need to coordinate. Ask the leasing company how long that normally takes and what forms you will be asked to sign.

Registration and plates

Insurance

If you buy the car, you need a policy that reflects ownership and, if it is financed, a lienholder. Confirm the effective date with your insurer before the payoff posts. We cover this step in Update Your Insurance After a Buyout.

A short script for the call

"I now live in [state] and my lease is titled in [state]. If I buy the car, what do you collect at purchase, how is the title sent, and what do I need for registration in my state?" Write down the answers and call your state's motor vehicle agency to confirm anything that sounds uncertain.
