The Ten-Minute Payoff Call: A Script You Can Read Out Loud

A written script for calling your leasing company, with the questions in the right order and a place to write each answer.

By Joe, Managing Director, Champion Auto Finance

Calling the company that holds your lease can feel awkward, because you are not sure what to ask or whether the person on the line will volunteer anything. A short script helps. Use the order below and write the answers down as you go.

Before you dial

Opening line

"Hello, I am calling about my lease that ends on [date]. I would like a purchase quote and some questions answered about the buyout process. Can you connect me with whoever handles that?"

If the first person cannot give a quote, ask for the department or number that can. Write down the name of everyone you speak to.

Question 1: What is the total payoff today?

Ask for the amount that would pay off the lease if it were paid today, and the amount if paid on a specific later date. These can differ because of remaining payments and interest components. Write down both, plus the date each is good through.

Question 2: What is included?

"Does that number include the residual value, the purchase option fee, and any other fees?" Then ask separately about sales tax, title, and registration. Some of these are collected by the lessor and some are handled at the state level after the purchase.

Question 3: Who is allowed to buy the car?

"If I use an outside financing company, what do you need from them, and is there anything that restricts that?" Listen carefully. The answer shapes your whole plan. For a longer look at why this question matters, see our post on third-party buyouts.

Question 4: How is payment sent?

Ask whether payment goes by wire, check, or electronic transfer, where it is sent, and how long it takes to post. Ask for the exact payee name and any reference number that must be on the payment.

Question 5: What happens to my title?

"After payoff, how long until the title is released, and is it electronic or paper?" Your state matters here. We walk through what to expect in Title and Registration After a Buyout.

Question 6: Can you send this in writing?

Ask for a written payoff statement by email or mail. If they say they cannot, ask for a reference or call number and note the date and time.

Closing line

"Thank you. To confirm, the total payoff is [amount], good through [date], and it includes [items]. Is that right?"

Repeating the numbers back catches mistakes while the representative is still on the line.

After the call

Put the numbers in a simple table next to the market value you estimated earlier. If you have not estimated it, start with our guide to residual versus market value.
